Mid-length fever hit us last\u003cbr\u003eyear, and whilst the Appleslice V3 was certainly 80% of the way, a\u003cbr\u003emore extreme and slender shape was already in development. Bal-\u003cbr\u003eancing a mid-length’s attributes to make it as versatile as possible\u003cbr\u003eis a challenge, and we’ve seen some brands perhaps bias one disci-\u003cbr\u003epline more than others, but Appletree’s massive size range caters for\u003cbr\u003eeveryone, with seven sizes from 37l to 97l in 10 liter increments. Cus-\u003cbr\u003etoms are of course available in terms of both color and sizing. Lengths\u003cbr\u003erange from 5’0” to 6’8” in the bigger sizes. Our test board was an 87l\u003cbr\u003e6’4 which has been perfect for lightwind frolicking in the UK.\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDue to the explosion in demand for Foil Drive boards, the Zapple was\u003cbr\u003ereleased earlier than the Skipper Midlength, but logically you will see\u003cbr\u003ea very similar board without the trench. Design wise, we’ve got a slen-\u003cbr\u003eder shape with some extra length per volume. Sharp lower rails and\u003cbr\u003elong clean lines maximize its planing area, with a forward foil box po-\u003cbr\u003esition and elongated track box. Its design influence is drawn from oth-\u003cbr\u003eer displacement hull sports – think kayak and canoes or performance\u003cbr\u003eSUPs – this means it’s as efficient as possible through the water. These\u003cbr\u003eattributes combine to make a board that planes, builds speed and\u003cbr\u003eactivates the foil extremely quickly, meaning less action and less flap-\u003cbr\u003eping. There’s a little kick of tail rocker which definitely helps release.\u003cbr\u003eY-oriented strap inserts are present to keep the masses happy, but\u003cbr\u003eon this style of board I find myself changing my stance regularly to\u003cbr\u003emaximize efficiency in different situations, but for those that like the\u003cbr\u003efeeling of assurance or want to jump, they are there if required.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBuild is to the usual extremely high standard with closed-cell water-\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eproof foam and a vacuum-infusion technique employed. This year\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ethey’ve beefed up the noses and decks of the board even further to\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ehelp avoid elbow dents or if you manage to smash your boom into it.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThis also stiffens what was already a very rigid board and translates\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ethe foil feeling more, which we assumed wouldn’t be possible.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the pursuit of parawing, the Midlength was great for more powered\u003cbr\u003esessions stepping down from full flotation, where an early as possible\u003cbr\u003erelease is extremely important. It made for easier cornering and better\u003cbr\u003eangles upwind, due to the reduction in drag from the bigger board. With\u003cbr\u003ethe more positive pull of a K-Wing it works extremely well and made the\u003cbr\u003ewave-riding experience far more playful.\u003cbr\u003eFor a non-committal prone rider like myself, the Midlength in a generous\u003cbr\u003evolume was quite a revelation. It paddles quick and the rocker fits well\u003cbr\u003einto smaller waves for extremely easy takeoffs. Pumping it was where it\u003cbr\u003ereally shone, as it’s so stiff for a big board; very little energy is lost and we\u003cbr\u003ecould wobble off for as long as our lung capacity could handle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(128, 128, 128);\"\u003eWinging the 87l Midlength alongside the 80l Appleslice V3 was an in-\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(128, 128, 128);\"\u003eteresting experiment. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"\u003eThe Slice has a little more roll stability due to its\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"\u003ewidth so is less of a handful on the surface, but the Midlength definitely\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"\u003etakes off significantly earlier, enabling you to be on a smaller foil or use\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"\u003eless wind in equivalent volumes. If you’re a more novice rider in choppy\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"\u003econditions take the Slice all day long, but a more advanced rider could\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"\u003eeasily take a Midlength into more consequential conditions and rougher\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"\u003esea states, and benefit from the improved low-end to get them on a\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"\u003esmaller foil.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(128, 128, 128);\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat sets the Appletree apart for the consumer is the stiff\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(128, 128, 128);\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ebuild, the highly efficient release, and the massive range of sensible di-\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: rgb(128, 128, 128);\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003emensions. \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s also stiff, very stiff in fact, and for a larger board doesn’t\u003cbr\u003efeel cumbersome as a result.
